SnapSoft has proven, through our partnership with them, that they have the expertise to manage the complexities of SCADA systems in the cloud. They’ve seamlessly integrated our infrastructure with their solutions, ensuring reliability and scalability.

The Challenge

Conduit Power faced the complex task of launching a Hitachi SCADA application on AWS for the first time. The traditional on-premises approach, involving significant hardware investments and a large team of engineers, was not feasible for a company in its growth phase. Additionally, Conduit needed a solution that could handle regulatory requirements, provide operational flexibility during emergencies, and support their goal of managing 300 megawatts of power within three years.

SnapSoft’s Solution

To address these challenges, Conduit Power decided to deploy their SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system on AWS, leveraging SnapSoft's expertise in cloud infrastructure. SnapSoft designed and implemented an AWS-based architecture using Python, Lambda, S3 buckets, and Terraform, creating a virtual environment that mimicked traditional hardware networks. This cloud-based solution provided the necessary scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.

SnapSoft worked closely with Conduit Power and their partners, including Hitachi and various managed service providers, to ensure seamless integration and configuration. This collaboration allowed Conduit to avoid the significant costs and logistical challenges associated with maintaining physical hardware, while also providing the ability to operate their SCADA application remotely during emergencies.

The Outcome

The partnership between SnapSoft and Conduit Power resulted in a highly resilient and efficient SCADA system, meeting all regulatory requirements and operational needs. Key outcomes included: Regulatory Compliance: The cloud-based solution met all regulatory requirements for operational continuity and backup capabilities, with duplicated availability zones and servers ensuring high availability.

Operational Flexibility: Conduit Power's team could operate the SCADA application remotely, maintaining operations during major storms and other emergencies without risking safety or revenue.

Cost Savings: By avoiding significant hardware investments and ongoing maintenance costs, Conduit Power could allocate resources more effectively towards growth and innovation.

Scalability: The AWS-based architecture provided the flexibility to scale operations as needed, supporting Conduit's goal of managing 300 megawatts of power within three years.

The successful deployment of the Hitachi SCADA application on AWS also positioned Conduit Power as a trailblazer in the energy sector, showcasing the viability and benefits of cloud-based solutions for other utilities and regulated entities. This case study serves as a testament to SnapSoft's ability to deliver innovative and effective cloud infrastructure solutions tailored to the unique needs of their clients.
